Shower curtains play a significant role in bathroom design. The plastic mono-colored liners of the past are long gone. Today’s shower curtains are stylish, often whimsical, defining the personal space of the home dweller. The following sections shed light on the basic things to keep in mind while purchasing a shower curtain.

THE PERFECT SIZE AND DESIGN:

Actually, there is a plethora of shower curtain designs available ranging from the single-colored ones to those with stripes or sophisticated floral prints. In order to decide on the perfect size, you need to consider the size of your shower area. Most shower and bath combination fixtures are 5 to 6 feet wide and the shower curtain is hung six feet above the floor. So, most home owners will prefer a shower curtain which is 70” long and 72” wide. However, if the bathtub is particularly longer or has a carved shower rod, a wider curtain will be needed.

WHICH MATERIALS TO CHOOSE?
Plastic shower curtains come with bright colored designs printed on them. They are also inexpensive and easy to maintain which makes them an ideal choice for a children’s bathroom. Home owners who prefer a formal bathroom can go for fabric curtains which not only come in various colors, but also include woven patterns. The fanciest fabric curtains even have laced edges around the trim. However, you must choose the color and material depending on the bathroom décor. Silk shower curtains are difficult to maintain as they should be hand washed and not dry cleaned.

CURTAIN LINERS AND RINGS:
Every curtain has three parts: the liner, the curtain itself and the rods that hold both the liner and curtain on the shower rod. A good liner is a must for the curtain to last long. It should be made of water-resistant material like PVC vinyl or Polypropylene. Fabric liners are available for environment-friendly homeowners, but they doesn’t have high water resistance.

DETERMINE THE QUALITY:
All shower curtains must be replaced at some point, the difference lies in how long a curtain lasts before needing a replacement. To determine this, examine the curtain’s details carefully. The weaving surrounding the grommets, the series of holes at the curtain’s upper region for holding the shower rings, must be incredibly tight. If you are buying a fabric curtain, its edges must be hemmed perfectly with no frays.

CLEANING A SHOWER CURTAIN:
While the humidity in the bathroom will eventually spell the end of every shower curtain at some point, with regular cleaning, the shower liner or curtain will be mold free for as long as possible. You will need a shower spray or cleaner used for cleaning the tiles. Spray the cleaner on the shower liner but not on the curtain itself unless it is made of plastic. Also, the plastic curtains should not be washed in hot water or dried using high heat. Never postpone cleaning the curtain until the mildew appears. If the curtain is discolored to the extent that no amount of cleaning removes the mildew stains, then it means that the time has arrived to replace it with a new one.

A good shower curtain simply makes your bathroom look gorgeous and brings you compliments from friends and guests.
